چکیده

The Quasi-crystalline Approximation and the Dense Media Radiative Transfer Equation (QCADMRT) have been applied to active and passive microwave remote sensing of snow [1] [2]. The salient features of the model include weaker frequency dependence than Mie scattering for the same grain size and a stronger forward scattering than Rayleigh phase function. We use passive microwave satellite data from AMSR-E to develop retrieval algorithms for the snow water equivalent (SWE). The passive retrieval algorithm makes use of the brightness temperatures at 18.7GHz and 36.5GHz and a least-squared optimization algorithm, where the snow grain size and snow depth are the two variables in the cost function. The retrieval algorithm has been applied to Alaska and Western United States. The results of retrieval algorithm are validated with SNOTEL ground measurement data from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. The performance of SWE retrieval is beyond the heritage algorithm.

A prototype AMSR-E global snow area and snow depth algorithm

A methodologically simple approach to estimate snow depth from spaceborne microwave instruments is described. The scattering signal observed in multifrequency passive microwave data is used to detect snow cover. Wet snow, frozen ground, precipitation, and other anomalous scattering signals are screened using established methods. The results from two different approaches (a simple time and conti...

Modeling the Passive Microwave Remote Sensing of Snow Using Dense Media Radiative Transfer Theory with Nmm3d Rough- Surface Boundary Conditions

The effects of volume scattering and rough-surface scattering in passive microwave remote sensing are treated. The volumescattering model is based on dense medium radiative transfer (DMRT) theory with quasicrystalline approximation (QCA) for densely distributed sticky particles. The rough-surface bistatic scattering and emission are modeled using the numerical Maxwell model of 3D simulations (N...

Modeling Microwave Emission at High Frequency from Stratified Snow Using Dense Media Radiative Transfer Theory Based on the Quasicrystalline Approximation (qca/dmrt)

1. ABSTRACT The multi-layer dense media radiative transfer (DMRT) theory based on the quasicrystalline approximation (QCA) has been applied for studying both passive and active microwave remote sensing signatures [1], [2]. It is shown that the layered structure is essential to analyze the microwave emission from snow because high frequency is sensitive to the scattering from the medium top and ...

Possibility of Estimating Seasonal Snow Depth Based Solely on Passive Microwave Remote Sensing on the Greenland Ice Sheet in Spring

Sea level rise related to the melting and thinning of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), a subject of growing concern in recent years, will eventually affect the global climate. Although the melting of snow on the GrIS is actively monitored by passive microwave remote sensing, very few studies have estimated the seasonal GrIS snow depth using this technique. In this study, to estimate seasonal sno...
